Coliseum Cafe & Grill Room, Plaza 33

Coliseum is one of the oldest steakhouses in town. They've been around since 1921 and it's almost a century so to say. When I was young, my parents brought me to their one and only outlet in KL. But as we grow older, things have changed and it's a hassle to travel down there for food. Traffic had increased and my parents are older.

In recent PJ property development, there are restaurants mushrooming in the once sleepy residential area. Plaza 33 being a newly extended wings from Jaya 33 offers new offices and F&B outlets. We were super excited when we found out that Coliseum will be opening a branch there. Without having to travel to downtown KL and yet we get to eat Coliseum's famed Hainanese cuisine.

Yesterday was their soft launch and we had to check it out. I went to my parent's place right after work and they were all ready to go. Grandma was super excited, perhaps of past good memories of the place. We ran into dad's friend from school and my brother's friend. It goes to show that PJ folks are dying for new places to eat.

Old school charm

Menu

It was only 6pm and the place is buzzing with hungry customers.

Fresh Apple Juice

Cream of mushroom soup - served with bread and butter. It was not hot when served but instead it was lukewarm. The base of the soup was not properly diluted.

Oxtail soup - this is lovely but a tad cold

Hainanese Chicken Chop - this is meant to be their signature but it was just so-so. Perhaps our expectations was too high.

Hainanese Fried Mee - this was okay

Baked Crabmeat - this is a recommended dish from Coliseum BUT the inside was too dry, flaky and tasteless. I only took one bite could not bring myself to eat another one.

Supreme Chicken Cordon Bleu - this is okay dish to order.

Chicken Maryland - the meat was too dry and salty

Roast Chicken with Turkey Ham - the chicken was tasteless, overfried and the ham was too salty.

Coliseum used to be the place to go to for good western food but we were all sadly disappointed. All of us agreed that we had a weird feeling after the meal. A great legacy is lost or perhaps the food is mediocre and does not live up to its name ? Only time will tell and I hope that they change their chef.

  3. Hi Paul,

Thank you taking the time to comment on my post.
It was written as how I see it. I for one love Coliseum but it was a disappointing experience. I do hope that you'll take into consideration what I wrote and hope that things changed.

  5. Dear Mindy,

I came across your blog and I would like echo the generally negative opinions about this place. I, myself, reviewed this restaurant in my blog. Do check it out http://foodmolecule.blogspot.com/2013/07/restaurant-review-coliseum.html
