Anna-thai Kitchen

We have not gone back to Penang since Chinese New Year and missed the food dearly. Therefore, we took a day off before Labour Day so that we could have a total of 4 days off plus the weekend to visit Penang and my in-laws.

We were supposed to start the journey early today so that we could start eating our way around Penang from noon. However, due to the previous late night of watching TVB series we woke up pretty late the next day and missed out our afternoon makan plan in Penang.

We arrived just in time for dinner and my MIL recommends that we try out Anna-thai Kitchen in Pulau Tikus. It’s a terrace house converted into a restaurant and when we got there the place was bustling with customers and food being served.

The interior of the restaurant is simple with a few tables at the porch area for smokers, and 2 indoor dining area. There are approximately 10 tables in total if I’m not mistaken. I did some research while I was inside the restaurant and found out that during the day, they sell Thai Economy Rice (I assume it is specially to cater to working professionals and their lunch time) and they serve ala carte menu during the night.

Khai Jaew Cha Om – Thai Omelette with Cha Om Leaf
Cha Om Leaf is truly fragrant and not overpowering with the lightly fried eggs. It does not leave an oily after taste in your mouth. The sambal brings the omelette to a whole new level of "omelette-awesome-ness"

Gai Phat Katiam Pik Thai – Stir fried Chicken with Garlic & Black Pepper sauce
Pretty low key dish and the right amount of black pepper. Some place tend to overdo the black pepper as though it’s going out of fashion.

Phat Pak Boong Fi Daeng – Stir fried Water Spinach (Kang Kong) with Salted Soy Sauce
This is not what we expected. Our initial thought was, “Eh ? How come only the stem? How come so weird looking wan?” But this is truly simple and nice. I love this because they only serve the kangkong’s stems.

Tom Yam Kung – Tom Yam Prawn
Nice tomyam but a bit too sour for me. Mr Hubs love it!

Pla Tord Chu Chi – Deep Fried Fish cooked with Brown Curry Sauce
This dish is not in the menu and highly recommended by the owner. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. With a light brownish colour curry sauce to complement. This dish is basically not drowned in gravy and I like it this way. The meat does not get soggy and more lasting during the meal. You get to taste the freshness of the fish rather than just the gravy.

After our delicious dinner, we had a little chit-chat with the owner and found out that they’ve only been opened for business about a year plus and the cook is his mother.  This is a great place for lovely home-cooked Thai food at a very affordable price. Here, you’ll be sure to have a pleasant dinner with their ever smiling server. This is indeed a place that practices “Service with a smile”

Hummingbirds Coffee Bar, Bangsar *CLOSED DOWN*

One fine night, I was in Bangsar all alone with no plans and nothing to do. No...no... no... *tell self to stop exaggerating and drama-fied everything*

Ahem.. let's start afresh. Now, where was I? Ah yes, I was in Bangsar sometime ago with Mr Hubs and Ms AYTZ for drinks. At that point of time, I've not stepped into the Bangsar territory for a while. There's no particular reason for that if you're asking.

Anyway, we were walking around aimlessly looking for a place to lepak and we saw this small cafe along Jalan Telawi 3, Bangsar. Ms AYTZ suggested that we hangout at Hummingbirds Coffee Bar as she have been there with some friends before.

A brief history was shared that it's owned by the local designer Beatrice Looi blah blah. Half the shop is a cafe and the other half for clothes. The indoor seating area looks cosy and the outdoor area well, there's nothing to share coz it's a few table setup on the walkway. It's cramp and full of mozzies.

I did not snap any photo of the facade of the cafe coz it was dark and camera lighting is my kryptonite.

Red Velvet Cupcake - reasonable size.

Rainbow Cake - very filling. If you're the type that can't finish a plate of rice with dish normally then better share this with someone or you'll cry eating halfway and the rest go to waste.

A selection of Macarons. Can't remember the flavours. But I know the green one as Wasabi.

A friend of mine asks me recently whether I'm interested to help her write about desserts. I want to help badly, but I am so blah with describing desserts. Dessert is pretty subjective thing and it differs from different individual's palate. I for one, do not like overly sweet stuff.

Hoi Peng Seafood Restaurant, SS2 PJ

This is an old favourite of my family and I. We used to eat at the one located at Old Klang Road but the SS2 branch is much closer to home. Many nights ago (I think last year) we ate there coz I love to eat crabs, don't know why.

We went there when I first got my LX5 and the photos are mostly test shots by manual mode. I hope that it did not turn out too bad.

Sotong Kangkung (direct translation would be Cuttlefish Water Convolvulus) to the extreme

 Close-up shot

 HK Kailan (my normal veg...hehe)

Stir fried Clams with Ginger and Chinese Wine (the clams were fresh and tasty..yumz!)

Lemon Chicken (so-so only coz the chicken is over-fried so the texture was too dry)

Foo Yoong Egg (the safest dish in any Chinese restaurant across the world, if a particular restaurant eff up this dish then it's best not to return)

Steamed Crab (just right and loads of meat)

My personal opinion on eating crabs is to only order the steamed ones coz it must be fresh and normally they will give you bigger ones with more meat. Not so fresh crabs are normally cooked with chilli and whatnot. Don't believe me ? Compare your crabs next time you have a seafood meal.

EAT Food Village, Publika

Publika is one of the latest hangout spot for Mr Hubs and I plus friends, especially Ms TEL and Mr LSY. The place is quirky and a total breath of fresh air. I dare say that most people do not where Publika is located at. They are actually located at Solaris Dutamas. Still don't know? It's further down the road from the famed Solaris Hartamas or SOHO KL.

Anyways, this post is not about Publika but it's food court called EAT Food Village. It is located on Level UG, same floor as B.I.G Ben's Independent Grocer. B.I.G is on one end and the EAT Food Village the other end. Easy peasy!

What's so special about this place? First off, it's a non-halal food court and secondly, it is not just any food court. They have some big names like Yeoh's Bak Kut Teh from the Klang's Hokkien Association, Restoran Kin Kin, Lorong Seratus Tahun etc.

Here, we only ordered from Lorong Seratus Tahun because at that time, we couldn't eat so much therefore for a start this 2 dish.

Char Kuey Teow with pork lard...yumz!

Assam Laksa

Drop by the food court when you're around the neighbourhood. They also have Chatime to quench your thirst. Mr Hubs and I went back there a couple of time to tryout the rest of the food. This is a place where the food won't go wrong. We have yet to try Yeoh's Bak Kut Teh, but we will soon. And try to get there early before the lunch or dinner crowds.

il Lido Italian Dining + Lounge Bar *CLOSED DOWN*

I get to dine at il Lido Italian Dining + Lounge Bar one serendipitous afternoon, it was a farewell lunch for one of my close colleague Ms FN. Her ex-boss Ms MT came up with the wonderful idea of eating there as it is across the street from our office. And the lovely Ms Lyla was our gracious host of the day.

This post comes out a little late as the farewell was late last year (Dec 2011). To be honest, I have forgotten about it coz I snap snap snap photos of food every single day. Anyway, I finally had the time to look through my photo albums and hence the post.

We ordered their set lunch and it is definitely worth every single cents. Priced at only RM49.90, you get to enjoy italian fine dining at it's best. With a warm ambience and fantastic service. You will definitely not get this type of service anywhere else.

I will not elaborate on the name of the dishes because the lunch set changes now and then. For more info, do visit their website http://www.il-lido.com.my for their lunch menu and their ala carte menu.

R.A.W Cafe (Real and Wholesome), Wisma Equity KL +closed down, rebranded and moved+

R.A.W Cafe is one of the few cafes in town that receive rave reviews for their coffee. Well, they have some good stuff going on alright. I am considered a regular coz I have lunch there once a week at least, sometimes twice or thrice (it depends very much on whether I have money in my wallet that day).

I will normally go with Ms TEL, Ms CT and Ms ES. Such a great place but only 4 of you go? Are you kidding me? Sure boh you ask. Reason being is that it's quite a distance to walk from our office and we have cravings for their brewed coffee. So far, they have the best coffee (no joke!). You will know once you've tried it.

If you are a meat eater, this is not the place for you as they only serve wholly vegetarian food and drinks. Highly suitable for vegans. I observe 2 days of this eating habit every month by choice and since I've discovered R.A.W Cafe, I eat less meat during lunch hour.

Their desserts are seasonable so grab it while you can. Ms Aishah has magic hands I tell you. She once made a kick ass Tiramisu in a cup. ( if you look at my blog header, you will see it's beautiful photo on the top right hand corner).I crave for it constantly but she do not have enough time to make it these days. I can only hope and pray and wait for their FB's update for the news. *hint hint*

Istana Bambu, Ampang KL

Wednesday was a public holiday because of the Installation of the 14th Agong of Malaysia. What do you do when you don't have to go to work? You go far, far away to explore and eat. That's right, folks! That's what we did.

Mr CAV recently flew back from BKK and read in the Going Places magazine of a magical place called, "Istana Bambu". Location? Jalan Hulu Kelang, Ampang, KL. And so we went there on a beautiful Wednesday night in 3 cars no less. The makan gang was me, Mr Hubs, Ms CAV, Ms CAL, Ms JL, Ms FN, Ms TEL and Mr LSY.

The entrance to Istana Bambu

Random fish basket as lamp holder

Cashier counter

Mini paddy field within the compound of the restaurant

For private or big groups. Sini kena duduk bersila, jangan main-main

Main dining area

Walkway to the washroom and private dining area

Loads of plants to create ambiance

 Bamboo and Balinese style deco

Smaller dining / group private dining area

 Mini pond

The menu

Salted Egg Squid (yumz!) everyone agreed that this is the best dish of the night.

Green Curry Beef

Kangkung Belacan

Seafood Tomyam. Very spicy and it contains flower crabs

Stir fried HK Kailan with Garlic

Braised Tofu with Broccoli and Mushroom. Very chinese style. We all sapu this.

Eggs cooked with long bean. Not sufficient for us coz this portion is small.

If I'm not mistaken this is Deep Fried Kerabu Mango Chicken. So-so only coz it tastes like cempedak.

Thai Steamed Fish. Not so fresh and oversteamed in our opinion.

Overall, the food served here is okay. Not too outstanding and not too bad. Service could improve more and a bit more attention should be paid to customers would be good. Do not order the drinks here, safe bets are canned drinks. Reason? Ms CAL and Ms FN's Grapefruit Juice tastes like Soya Bean. Don't believe me? Try it yourself, if you want to waste a couple of bucks on a drink that you probably won't finish.
