Kopi Cine @ China House, Penang

I visited Kopi Cine at China House twice in Penang this Chinese New Year due to the high recommendation of my boss Ms CT. She wax lyrical of their brewed coffee and I couldn't wait to check it out. As mentioned in one of my previous post, I normally seek for hawker food in Penang. I have never come across any nice coffee places there.

Before I left for Penang with Mr Hubs, I spent the night searching (I was tempted to say Googling but it's so cliché) the Net for other cafes to try out. I found a few other places but it was closed at that time. In a way, it's great news coz there'll be some place new for me to explore next.

Back to the main topic, Kopi Cine at China House. From what I've heard (psst local grapevine), the owner of this place is a wealthy Australian lady. The end of story. That's all I heard coz you know lar Chinese mar, it's all about the money.

I ask Mr Hubs' good friend Mr TBT the whereabout of this magical coffee place and he have never heard of it. I tell you ar, the locals are useless sometimes (hehe...jgn marah ya if you're reading this?)

The 4 of us set out in Mr AK's dad vintage Mercedes with malfunctioned air cond (we didn't know when we got into the car and regretted every seconds of it coz it's effingChineseNewYearandtheweatherishot) as it only blew out hot air. The outside temperature is cooler than the one inside the car. We got lost (3 out of 4 are Penangites, guess who is the tourist in there...)

When we finally found the place, it was like seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Here's a glimpse of the façade of the building.

As you can see, it's a heritage shoplot nicely refurbished with a touch of class to it. I call it simply chic.

The courtyard area. I call it the mini swimming pool.

Old style entrance way. So cool and it feels like I'm brought back to ancient time.

Seating area for 2.

Tweak the pic a lil with my LX5. This one is called "Expressive" and it heightens the colours. The green gets greener and blah.

The last time I saw one of this type of door, it was in China inside the Forbidden City. I'm impressed.

One of the many indoors dining area. The alleyway is looooonng I tell you. There are also books lining the walls, not sure whether it's for the patrons reading pleasure or plain deco.

The goodies table. A wide selection of pastries and desserts. I almost experience eye orgasm when I saw this table. It also feels like Alice in Wonderland's tea party with the Mad Hatter.

Scones oh lovely scones. I love them to bits.

Salted Caramel Apple Pie no less.

Quiche. This to me is okay-ish but to Mr TBT, it's not so good. Maybe he just don't like the texture. Quiche eating is a very subjective matter.

Pecan pie. I almost died when I ate this coz it was sooooo goood. Very generous with the nuts as you can see.

My serving of ze scone.

After 2 bites. Yum

Chocolate Cake... according to the boys, this is the winner.

Iced Latte

Cappuccino. Nicely brewed.

Cafe Latte. My 2nd drink.

Ban Lee Bak Kut Teh, Jalan Ipoh, KL

KL's traffic is a complete nightmare especially on Friday evening. I left the office quite late that night to avoid being stuck in traffic. Once I got home, Mr Hubs suggests that we head back down to KL for some BKT. I am game for it as it has been a while since I last ate there.

Ban Lee Bak Kut Teh is located at Jalan Ipoh (next to Dynasty Hotel). We parked the car by the roadside and ran to destination (it was drizzling that time). We were both famished and ordered straight away.

BKT is nice to be eaten during rainy season.

Tau foo pok. Just like any others.

Chillies and garlics.

I am deeply disappointed with this meal. We were both hungry and we both agreed that this is the worst BKT we have ever tasted. It used to be so good during my college days (eons ago). The BKT soup was too watered down, eventhough chinese wine is part of the ingredient. You basically taste the chinese wine, with a hint of herbs and that's all you get.

Chicago Rib House, Gurney Plaza, Penang

During the CNY break, I was in Penang with Mr Hubs (visiting my in laws and friends). After eating CNY-ish themed food for a couple of days, enough is enough! So we started exploring food around the island, no hawker food this time around coz everyone most was on break (yes! hawkers are human too and they need a break...).

We opt for Chicago Rib House in Gurney Plaza coz we wanted something porky and not so heavy. Yes, my definition of non-heavy food includes pork ribs. Haha... They have a new outlet at 1Utama which I haven't gotten around to makan yet. This place looks quiet and that's what I like about it.

The big ass menu. It resembles full colour newsletter, so cool.
Starter for us. Nachos with dip. Erm, I would say the one at Chilli's is much nicer and the salsa dip is a tad too watery.
Half slab of pork ribs with original sauce. More meat than the one at Morganfield's and slightly tastier. I think the one in Genting Casino tastes better.

Cafe Barbera, Sunway Pyramid *CLOSED DOWN*

You will notice that I frequent places with good brewed coffee. It's a new found love since I left my old life behind. Cafe Barbera has always been on my list of must try. When I found out that they've opened a branch in Sunway Pyramid, I immediately went and try.

Chocolate Shake - strictly for those who like it sweet and thick. It's a very rich drink and I wouldn't say no to it. But if you have a small appetite, best not to order this coz you won't be able to finish your food.

Cappuccino Italiano. Heavy headed after I drank this for the first time and couldn't sleep.

Cappuccino Napoletano (as it was served, BC = before Christ).

Cappuccino Napoletano (after the espresso shot with thick crema is poured in, AC = after Christ).
This is a better choice for me as I felt that this is lighter coz I like to drink coffee at any time of the day.

Mee Rebus. Not a bad choice.

Pan Grilled Dory Fish served with vegetables, mashed potato & dressed with anchovies sauce.
I'm not sure whether it was my bad luck on that day for eating out or the chef was dreaming when he made this. This is a plate of salt I tell you. The dory fish is coated with salt and obviously the anchovies sauce is super salty. Was there a major price drop in salt that I don't know about ? WTH?

Despite my bad experience with the above Dory Fish, I will still go back and try out their food as the pizzas look delish. And I love the fact that their coffee is good.

The Bee, Publika

One of the lazy weekends, we went exploring for food and wanted to check out E.A.T Village's non-halal food court. When we got there though, we went to The Bee instead coz it was newly opened then (yeah.. it took me forever to get my lazy ass to blog about this. what with the long CNY break). I've been to their first outlet at Jaya One and love The Last Polka's homemade ice cream that they carry. We thought of just having drinks at The Bee and proceed to our first choice for dinner. We ended up having dinner at The Bee instead. Once again, lazy ass beats everything else.

I'm quite impressed with the setup of this outlet. It has wide open space and their usual wood based furnishing. The space ratio from table to table is far enough that you can't eavesdrop on people's conversation (outdoor area). There is a sorta bar cum coffee making area on the far right and a stage for live performances. So far loving the feel of the place.
One of the outdoor area. You see that tall building there? It's where the art gallery is located. MAPS, KL in case you haven't seen it before. Both White Box and Black Box are located inside.

The tiles. Love how the reflection of lights on the tiles. It's like walking on the sky filled with stars.

One of the many entrance of Publika. Pening I tell you this place.

Salmon Wrap with Chips

I can't remember the name of this burger coz I forgot to jot down its name. My apologies.

The Bee Burger

Big Breakfast. My order coz I woke up not long ago, it was dinner time and I had breakfast. Such irony!

I kick myself for not snapping photos of the interior of The Bee when I had the chance. Will definitely go back and do so. Love the coffee and environment there. But it gets noisy as night falls coz I guess it's fast becoming a favourite makan place for everyone.
